Trauma Informed and Somatic therapies
There are several dedicated therapies available specifically for those who have had traumatic experiences, such as being in care often can be. It is widely accepted within the psychology sector that trauma remains trapped within the body on a cellular level, therefore somatic therapies can often be more helpful than traditional talking therapies. Types of somatic therapy include:
EMDR therapy
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) stimulates the left and right sides of the brain simultaneously to reduce the emotional intensity of distressing and traumatic memories. While EMDR is fairly new in the world of psychology, there is a wealth of research that demonstrates it's effectiveness in helping people process their trauma. You can find more information here.
Somatic Experiencing (SE)
Developed by Dr. Peter Levine, Somatic Experiencing is a trauma-focused therapeutic approach that aims to release the effects of trauma from the body. It emphasises the importance of restoring the natural self-regulation of the nervous system. You can find out more information and find an SE practitioner by clicking here.
Dance Movement Therapy (DMT)
DMT uses movement and dance as a form of expressive therapy. It can help individuals explore and integrate emotions, improve body awareness, and enhance overall well-being. Dance Movement Therapists may work in clinical, educational, or community settings. You can find a registered DMT therapist in your area, by clicking here.
Creative Arts Therapies
Music therapy and Art therapy can help children from complex and traumatic backgrounds in a range of ways. It can help to increase concentration and attention skills, improve family and social relationships and increase a child’s confidence. For many children it is the first step towards finding ways of dealing with their feelings of loss, frustration and emotional trauma so that they can start to learn to trust, love and lead happier lives. The British Association of Art Therapists (BAAT) has a list of art therapist available in your area and you can also use the find a therapist tool on The Institute for Arts in Therapy and Education's website to explore the services available in your area.
Sensorimotor Psychotherapy
Developed by Pat Ogden, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy integrates cognitive and body-centred approaches to address trauma and emotional issues. It focuses on the connection between bodily sensations, emotions, and thoughts. Find out more information here.
