This Black Adoption Project aims to look beyond short-term solutions to understand and respond to the many complex factors that impact adoption in the Black community.
It is a collaborative initiative between four Regional Adoption Agencies, covering 24 London boroughs, and Laurelle Brown Training & Consultancy. This project works closely with individuals who have lived experience of Black adoption, as well as Black communities in London.
To significantly improve the opportunities and outcomes for Black children, it is essential to identify, acknowledge, and address obstacles while providing the necessary support to Black adoptive parents, both before and after the adoption process. While some adoptive parents from non-Black racial and ethnic groups may be well-suited to adopt and care for Black children, and this is the right path for some children, ‘trans-racial’ adoption on its own is not a sufficient solution to the disparities Black children currently face in the adoption system. The project aims to offer support to parents from all racial identities and ethnicities who have adopted Black children, ensuring that appropriate resources and assistance are in place to help all Black adopted children thrive.
