Post-Adoption Contact: Changes and Constants

This year will see the publication of the President’s Public Law Working Group (Adoption Sub-Group) Best Practice in Adoption Report, along with its Best Practice Guidance. Chapter 1, which focuses on adoption and contact, is expected to have the most immediate impact. The sub-group has highlighted that the statutory framework already allows for greater flexibility in post-adoption contact, and the supporting research for more tailored solutions for individual children has been completed.

For professionals, it is crucial to understand what is changing and what remains the same. The interim report stressed the need for training to ensure all professionals are informed about the issues and options for children and are prepared to implement the best practice recommendations. This shift in emphasis will affect social workers, adoption agencies (both statutory and voluntary), and legal professionals.

The conference, taking place on Friday, 4 October 2024, from 9.30 am to 1.30 pm, will ensure delegates are aware of the changes and the essential priority – the lifelong welfare of the child.
